Rosacea

Rosacea is often called Adult acne.  Rosacea is characterized by flushing, broken facial vessels ( telangectasias), and acne.  Rosacea usually has an onset between 30 and 50 yo.  Patients usually have a long history of flushing in response to several stimuli.  These are known as triggers and include hot drinks, alcohol, and spicy foods.

Rosacea is often triggered by things that make you flush and therefore these things need to be avoided.

Several rare complications can occur secondary to sebaceous hyperplasia ( enlargement of the sweat glands).  The most recognized is a large bulbous nose called rhynophyma.

Treatments

  1. Avoid triggers- ie. saunas, alcohol, spicy foods, hot drinks
  2. Metronidazole cream
  3. Oral antibiotics
  4. IPL photorejuvenation
  5. Photodynamic Therapy
