Dermal Fillers

For temporary fillers, we use Restylane, Perlane and Restylane Fine Lines.  Temporary fillers are used to treat deep folds, wrinkles, depressed scars and for lip enhancement

What is Restylane

Restylane is hyaluronic acid in a stabilizing crystal-clear gel.  The hyaluronic acid is the same naturally occurring molecule found in humans.  This is the only product to offer NASHA ( Non-animal, Stabilized, Hyaluronic Acid) in North America and the first stable, biodegradable, non-animal hyaluronic acid available in the world. Therefore the Restylane gives shape and volume with ittle risk of reactions.

The Three Fillers

Medicis produces three different products based on NASHA; Restylane, Perlane, and Restylane Fine Lines.  The only difference between the productsis the size of the gel with Perlane being the thickest and Restylane Fine Lines being the thinnest.  These differences in the gel result in products that need to be injected into different skin depths and that treat different problems.

  1. Perlane is used for shaping facial contours ( cheek and chin), correcting deep folds, and volume augmentation of the lips.
  2. Restylane is used for wrinkle correction and lip enhancements.
  3. Restylane Fine Lines is used for correcting thin, superficial lines.

Uses of Fillers

  1. Lip enhancement
  2. Nasolabial folds
  3. Verticle lip lines ( smoker's lines)
  4. Marionette lines
  5. Depressed scars ( eg acne scars)
  6. Facial contouring
  7. Wrinkles not treatable with Botox or partially treated with Botox

How are Fillers Used

Restylane comes in pre-loaded syringes for use on a single patient.  The filler is injected into certain layers of the skin to add volume and plump up tissue or fill folds or wrinkles.  Usually the the area is frozen first with topical or injected anaesthesia. The amount of filler needed depends on the depth of the wrinkles/fold or the enhancement required.

Duration of Treatment

The filler can last 6-12 months depending on the location treated and individual patient characteristics, but the effect could be shorter or longer.  Touch-ups and follow-up treatments helps sustain the desired effects.

Pre-treatment Instructions

If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, you may need to be pre-treated with anti-viral medication.  Please discuss with the doctor before your treatment.

Post-Treatment Instructions

  1. Apply cold compresses to reduce swelling.
  2. Avoid touching the area for 6 hours following treatment.  After that, the area can be gently washed.
  3. Avoid exposing the area to intense heat until any redness and swelling have resolved.
  4. Avoid exercise and alcohol for 6 hours.
  5. Evidence shows that having a follow-up treatment before the product has fully dissipated will enhane the lasting effect.

Injection-Related Reactions

  1. Common reactions include: redness, swelling, mild pain, itching, bruising, and tenderness at the injection site.  These reactions are usually mild to moderate and typically resolve over a few days.
  2. Rare reactions ( 1 in 2000) include: localized allergic reactions with swelling and firmness at site and acne-like reactions lasting an average of 2 weeks but occasionally several months.
  3. Very rare reactions ( < 1 in 15,000) include: prolonged firmness, abscess formation, or greyish discolouration.  These reactions can develop weeks to months after injection and may persist for several months but normally resolve with time.
  4. Rarest reactions include: scabbing and sloughing of tissue at site which could result in a shallow scar.
