Acne Treatments

Blu-U

The Blu-U is a medical instrument used to treat mild to moderate acne.  The Blu-U emits a single wavelength of blue light which activates chemicals in the acne-forming bacteria killing the bacteria.  This treatment is FDA approved and does not contain the dangerous ultraviolet light.

Treatment usually involves 5 weeks of therapy either 16.5 minutes twice a week or 30 minutes once a week. 

There is no pain or discomfort from the light treatments and no side-effects.  All regular activities may be continued without interruption.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Levulan is a medicine which the doctor applies to your face or trunk
and then it is activated with the BLU-U after a predetermine length of
time, usually 60 minutes.  The Levulan can penetrate the acne and even
cystic acne to kill the bacteria and shrink the oil glands.  Levulan is very
safe and effective with no systemic side-effects.

Levulan PDT usually requires 3-4 treatments every 3-4 weeks. The skin must be prepared with an acetone scrub or microdermabrasion first.  The treatment works best by performing a microdermabrasion first.  Microdermabrasion also helps treat acne scars and hyperpigmentation.

Prior to PDT, only accutane showed such good results for treatment of acne but accutane has multiple systemic side-effects.
